Man, 80 dies as car overturns in ditch on M4 at Swindon

An 80-year-old man was killed when the car he was in crashed off the M4 motorway and overturned into a ditch.

The victim, from Bristol, died at the scene of the crash, a mile (1.6km) east of the Swindon West junction.

Two other men, the driver, aged 84, and front seat passenger, 80, suffered minor injuries and were treated at the Great Western Hospital.

Wiltshire Police said the occupants were returning home from Luton airport after a holiday, on Monday.

"The black Peugeot 206 left the carriageway and went down a bank before overturning in a ditch," a spokesman said.

"The backseat passenger suffered multiple injuries and died at the scene.

"Anyone who witnessed the accident which happened just after 1pm is asked to contact police."

The motorway was closed for several hours while the accident was investigated.
