Wiltshire oil thefts prompt police warning

Householders in rural areas of Wiltshire have been warned by police to be vigilant after a rise of heating oil thefts from garden tanks.

Wiltshire Police said there have been at least eight thefts in areas such as Clyffe Pypard, Tockenham and Royal Wootton Bassett in recent weeks.

A spokesman said the thieves may be using a tanker to steal the oil.

Homeowners are being advised to fit padlocks to their tanks and consider installing CCTV and alarms.

Police urged anyone who notices anything suspicious, or is offered cheap heating oil by an unregistered dealer, to contact them.
