Swindon Borough Council agrees to £16m budget cuts

About 100 jobs are to go and some services will be cut at Swindon Borough Council after £16m budget cuts were approved.

The Conservative-run council narrowly managed to push through its budget proposals only with support from four Liberal Democrat councillors.

Bus subsidies and children's centre funding will be cut but £20,000 funding to homeless charities has been saved.

Swindon Borough Council's budget for 2013-14 has been set at £148m.

Another concession that was made in the budget was to allow more time for communities to take on the running of libraries.

Funding will now be kept on for another year to get volunteers in place.

The Conservative-run council has a majority of just one, but one of the Conservative councillors was unable to make the meeting last night.
