Wiltshire snow: Drivers warned of ice following snowfall

Drivers in Wiltshire are being warned of ice on the roads following heavy snowfall which caused travel disruption around the county on Friday.

Gritters have been treating the roads around Wiltshire in a bid to keep them clear of snow and ice.

Wiltshire Council said it had been informed that overnight road surface temperatures would not get above freezing for the next few days.

The Met Office said more snow flurries were expected in the region.

Head of Wiltshire Council's gritting team Adrian Hampton said: "You've got to drive with care out there."

The authority said it was continuing to monitor the situation and asked people to check disruptions to services via its website.

Police in the county are also advising drivers to avoid any unnecessary journeys.

Following two days of disruptions, some rail services have been restored.

The South West Trains service between Salisbury and Bristol Temple Meads has been restored after it was closed for two days due to the weather.

Railway operator First Great Western said there were delays of up to one hour on trains running between Bristol and London Paddington, due to a signal problem. It was unable to give an estimate on when the problem would be resolved.

But while the snow and ice remains, passengers are being advised to check before attempting to travel.

Pitch clear

Thamesdown bus services are running as normal with some modifications. Customers are advised to check its website for a full list of changes.

Stagecoach buses out of Swindon are running a normal service on most routes.

Swindon Town fans helped to clear snow from the County Ground pitch on Friday evening

Swindon Town's League One game against Shrewsbury went ahead following a pitch inspection at the County Ground.

Fans worked alongside manager Paolo Di Canio on Friday evening to clear snow from the pitch cover in a bid to ensure the game went ahead.

Volunteers also helped to clear snow from the pitch at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium on Saturday morning prior to Salisbury City's Conference South game with Staines.
