Womad festival crowd sets new air guitar world record
A crowd of 2,227 people 'playing' to Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze set a new world record for the largest air guitar ensemble at Womad in Wiltshire
More than 2,000 music festival goers in Wiltshire have set a new world record for the largest air guitar ensemble.
A crowd of 2,227 playing to Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze set the record at the Womad Festival in Malmesbury, beating the current record of 1,883 set in 2009 in Australia.
The competition was organised by charity Action on Hearing Loss and was attended by Guinness World Records.
UK air guitar champion Thom "Wild Thing 37" Wilding led the attempt.
Emma Harrison, from the hearing charity, said: "We picked the air guitar because it's one of the few instruments that doesn't damage your hearing.
"We've had a long standing partnership with Womad and we sell ear plugs and protectors at the festival."
It will take several weeks before the record is officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records.
