The Gloucestershire coroner has been arrested on suspicion of fraud, theft and money laundering.

Alan Crickmore, 54, was suspended from duty in December when the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) began investigating his Cheltenham law firm.

He was arrested by police last Thursday and later released on bail pending further inquiries.

A police spokesman said: "Having been briefed by the SRA, we felt it appropriate to begin our own inquiry."

'Search warrants'

The spokesman said: "We can confirm that a 54-year-old Cheltenham man was arrested at his home address on the morning of Thursday 13 January on suspicion of fraud, theft and money laundering.

"At the same time search warrants were executed at a number of addresses in Cheltenham and Gloucester.

"The activity followed the formal launch of a police investigation into matters under investigation by the SRA.

"Once details of the SRA investigation were made public, we had a duty to determine whether or not a criminal investigation should be launched."

He added: "We are liaising with all relevant parties in this matter, including Gloucestershire County Council."

The SRA said previously it was looking into alleged breaches of the solicitors' code of conduct and accounting rules, and allegations of suspected dishonesty against Mr Crickmore.

Mr Crickmore was bailed until 18 April.
