A masked robber who used a Taser on a woman in Gateshead in order to steal her handbag is being hunted by police.

The woman, 40, was in the underpass at the roundabout of Park Lane, Felling, at about 14:30 BST on Monday when she was approached by a man wearing a red hat and scarf over his face.

The man demanded her bag and when she refused he used a Taser on her.

Police said the woman suffered "redness and blistering" to her neck and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

Northumbria Police said the man ran off with the bag and got into a car parked nearby, which was driven by a second man.

The car is described as a red Nissan hatchback, bearing what is believed to be a cloned registration number GL57 DPS.

It was last seen turning right on to the Felling Bypass, police said.

Det Sgt Richard Cusack, said: "This is a most unusual incident in this area of Gateshead and officers are carrying out inquiries to identify those responsible."
