A disabled man from Durham died from a head injury 11 days after he was assaulted, police said.

Scott Hall, 28, was found unconscious on Saturday at the foot of the stairs of the home he shared with his mother in Caterhouse Road.

He was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of Monday.

A post mortem examination confirmed he died of a bleed on the brain caused by a head injury. Mr Hall was assaulted on 24 July.

He was attacked near Newton Hall Library at about 22:15 BST and treated in hospital before being released.

Two 15-year-old boys were arrested in connection with the assault. They have been questioned and bailed.

Mr Hall's family described him as having physical and learning disabilities.

Det Ch Insp Steve Chapman, from Durham Constabulary, said he was keeping an open mind into what caused Mr Hall's head injury.

He said: "The enquiries into the assault represent part of a much wider and very thorough investigation into how Scott came by the head injury which ultimately caused his death."
