A man who died after wading into a lake on Tyneside has been named by police.

Andrew McWilliams, aged 22, who is said by police to be local to the area, was brought out of the water at Watergate Park, Gateshead, on Thursday afternoon.

He was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where he was pronounced dead.

Northumbria Police said it was too early to say what had happened but officers did not believe anyone else was involved.

Ch Supt Gordon Milward warned there could be hidden hazards in open water. Very cold rivers and lakes, even on hot days, could have "dramatic effects on the body", he said.
