Laughing gas taken in Newcastle car theft

A car containing dozens of canisters of laughing gas has been stolen in Newcastle.

The nitrous oxide was being delivered to a property in the Jesmond area when the driver was threatened by two men armed with knives.

They took his Peugeot 406, along with his stock of 75 canisters of the gas.

Northumbria Police has appealed for information about the theft in Holly Avenue, which took place at about 04:55 BST.

    It follows public protests over the proposals, and earlier this week, the council's cabinet voted to ditch the six sites it had earmarked.

    A fresh warning about the dangers of swimming in rivers and lakes during the hot weather has been given - a year to the day after two teenage girls died while swimming in the River Wear.

    Rider 'critical' after collision 09:36:

    A man has been left in a critical condition after a collision between a scooter and a pedestrian on Linthorpe Road in Middlesbrough at about 18:30 on Tuesday.

    The 21-year-old rider of the off-road style 50cc Yamaha scooter suffered serious head injuries, internal injuries and lacerations.

    The pedestrian, also aged 21, suffered a broken foot and lacerations and is described as being in a "stable" condition.

    The search for a swimmer missing in the River Tees is due to resume later this morning after student David Zikhali, 20, got into difficulties near the Millennium Bridge in Stockton on Monday evening.

    A friend of Mr Zikhali's, Commonwealth Games sprinter Richard Kilty, said the news was "absolutely devastating".
