A Tyneside naval veteran who served on the Arctic convoys in World War Two has received his Arctic Star medal on his 90th birthday.

James Newlands, who lives in Ryton near Gateshead, was honoured at a dockside ceremony when his medal was presented by the Commander of HMS Mersey, moored at North Shields.

Mr Newlands joined up at the age of 16 and headed out on his first convoy in 1942.

Look North's Adrian Pitches was at the ceremony.
