A man has been found dead at a waste management site in Washington.

He was discovered at the site on Wilden Road, Pattinson Industrial Estate just after 13:00 BST on Tuesday.

Northumbria Police initially said the death was being treated as suspicious but later said there was "no third-party involvement".

The body is yet to be formally identified but police believe the man to be 26-year-old John Sumner of Lincoln Street, Sunderland.

A post-mortem examination has been carried out, but was inconclusive.

Further tests will now take place and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Rubbish at the site comes from household bins, mainly in the Sunderland area, as well as skips.

It is separated and sent to landfill or for incineration or recycling and it was during that process that the body was seen.
