A man has been charged with murder after a 32-year-old man attacked in a street in Washington, near Sunderland.

Bryan Knox, from Barmston in Washington, was found in the road on the Usworth Hall estate on Sunday. He died later in hospital.

A post-mortem examination revealed the 32-year-old died after suffering pressure injuries to his neck.

Northumbria Police said local man Gary Mawson, 36, had been charged with murder. He is due in court on Tuesday.
