Nikki Allan murder: Held man will not face charges

Nikki Allan Nikki Allan was stabbed 37 times

A man arrested in connection with the murder of a seven-year-old Sunderland girl almost 22 years ago, is to face no further action, police have said.

Nikki Allan was found in a then-derelict building near her family home at Wear Garth in October 1992. She had suffered 37 stab wounds.

Northumbria Police said a 43-year-old arrested on suspicion of murder had now had his bail cancelled.

A force spokesman said inquiries into the girl's murder would continue.

In September last year the BBC's Crimewatch featured an appeal and reconstruction of Nikki's last movements.

Two years after her death a neighbour was acquitted of murder.

The trial heard that although he had confessed to the killing a judge ruled police had used "oppressive methods" during questioning and he was found not guilty.
