Praying mantises fitted with 3D glasses in Newcastle trial

1 May 2014 Last updated at 21:03 BST

Scientists at Newcastle University have fitted praying mantises with 3D glasses.

The aim is to investigate the creatures' vision - the only insect known to see in 3D.

It is hoped the £1m project will help develop eyesight in robotics and computer technology.

Sharon Barbour reports.
