Man held over syringe needle attack in Gateshead

A woman was jabbed in the hand with a syringe needle, police have said.

The 20-year-old victim, who was in a wheelchair, was attacked by a man on Wrekenton High Street.

She suffered a minor injury and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical checks.

Northumbria Police said a 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and later bailed. The incident happened at about 14:00 BST on Wednesday.

Det Inst Sharon Chatterton said: "This is quite an unusual incident, which was obviously a shock for the victim."
