Body of man, 72, found in River Wear in Washington

The body of a 72-year-old man has been found in the River Wear.

The man has been indentified as coming from Durham but Northumbria Police said he would not be named until an inquest.

He was found in the river at Bonemill Lane, Fatfield in Washington at about 12:30 BST on Thursday and taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers are not looking for anyone in connection with his death, a force spokeswoman said.
