Gateshead house fire: Man arrested on suspicion of murder

A 45-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man after a house fire.

Firefighters were called to the blaze in Redemarsh, Leam Lane, Gateshead just after 18:30 BST on Tuesday.

A 53-year-old man suffered substantial burns and was taken to hospital where he died on Wednesday.

A second 45-year-old man was treated for smoke inhalation and later released, police said. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Det Ch Insp Christina Barrett, of Northumbria Police, said: "The investigation is in its very early stages and we are working with the fire service to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the fire.

"Early indications are that the fire was started inside the property."
