Man, 49, dies after Gateshead road crash

A man has died following a road crash on Tyneside.

The 49-year-old was driving a Peugeot 308 on the A692 Lobley Hill Road, near the junction with Schoolhouse Lane at Marley Hill, Gateshead, at 14:21 BST on Monday.

It left the road and hit a hedgerow before rolling on to its roof.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman confirmed he died shortly afterwards. A 53-year-old woman passenger suffered "non life-threatening" injuries.

She was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary by air ambulance.

The road was closed for about four hours while investigations took place.
