An elderly married couple have been found dead in their Wearside home.

The bodies of Kenneth and Edna Fisher were found by a carer at a property at Biddick Villas, in Columbia, Washington, shortly before 10:30 BST.

Paramedics pronounced them dead at the scene.

Northumbria Police said inquiries were under way to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Mr Fisher was 76 and his wife was aged 74.

Det Ch Insp Christina Barrett, of Northumbria Police's Major Crime Team, said: "This investigation is at an early stage.

"However, there is nothing to suggest there is any threat to the wider community.

"Early indications are that no-one else has been involved in these deaths, but our enquiries continue to establish exactly what has taken place."
