A £5m project to create a new promenade and sea defences along a South Tyneside beach has been completed.

The promenade at Littlehaven beach in South Shields was formally opened by the Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear Nigel Sherlock earlier.

South Tyneside Council leader Iain Malcolm said the project was a "key milestone" for the area.

It was funded by the council, Northumbrian Water and the Environment Agency.
