Nobel Prize winner Prof Peter Higgs has been awarded the Freedom of the City of Newcastle.
Born in Newcastle in 1929, the physicist went on to predict the existence of a particle - the Higgs boson - and proposed a mechanism to explain why the most basic building blocks of the Universe have mass.
Professor Higgs returned to his home city for the presentation.
