Professor Peter Higgs awarded Freedom of City of Newcastle

Nobel Prize winner Prof Peter Higgs has been awarded the Freedom of the City of Newcastle.

Born in Newcastle in 1929, the physicist went on to predict the existence of a particle - the Higgs boson - and proposed a mechanism to explain why the most basic building blocks of the Universe have mass.

Professor Higgs returned to his home city for the presentation.
