Motorists are being warned to expect delays while one of the bridges across the River Tyne is closed temporarily for essential maintenance.

The Redheugh Bridge in Newcastle will be shut in both directions until 18:00 GMT on Sunday.

Workers will clean gullies, inspect and clean expansion joints, and inspect and repair road lighting.

Traffic will be diverted across the Tyne Bridge. Gateshead Council has apologised for any inconvenience.

The closure is necessary because high pressure water jets will be in use throughout the day, and there is a potential risk to traffic from flying debris, the council said..
