Newcastle bar rape investigation dropped

Police have dropped an investigation into an alleged rape of a teenage girl in the toilets of a Newcastle bar in the early hours of Boxing Day.

The 19-year-old told police she had been attacked at about 02:20 GMT in Eazy Street on Westmoreland Road on Thursday.

Northumbria Police said inquiries found "no rape had taken place".

A spokesman for the force said there would be "no further police action" in relation to the incident.

    Strike action outside of James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough is causing heavy traffic on the A172 Stokesley Road in both directions between the B1380 Ladgate Lane junction and the Clairville Road junction.

    08:39: Man held over petrol station robbery

    A man has been arrested following a robbery at a Wallsend petrol station. The robber entered Blue Sign Service Station on the Coast Road just after 18:20 yesterday wearing a dark motorbike helmet and holding a carrier bag.

    He produced a black handgun from the bag and demanded money from a member of staff, police said. He made off with cash from the till.

    A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

    Two men have been arrested in connection with the death of a man who was assaulted outside a bar in Washington.

    John Potts, 45, from Sunderland, was found with a head injury near NE38 Sports Bar in Barmston at 00:50 on Sunday. He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

    Northumbria Police has arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murder and a 29-year-old man on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

    There is one lane closed and queuing traffic on the A19 Tees Flyover southbound in Stockton between the Portrack Interchange and the A66 because of a broken down car.
