Sopefoluwa Peters: River body was missing student

A body found in the River Wear has been confirmed as that of a missing Durham University student.

Sopefoluwa Peters was last seen near Elvet Bridge in the city on 29 October.

His disappearance sparked a major search, with members of his family travelling from Northern Virginia in the United States to assist.

Durham Police has now said that a body found on 8 December has been formally identified as that of the 20-year-old. An inquest will be held on Thursday.

Mr Peters, usually known as Sope, was a second-year economics student at Hatfield College at the university.
