Two men have pleaded not guilty to the murder of a Sunderland man whose body was discovered by a dog walker.

Grandfather John Hall, 46, of Shiney Row, was discovered in West Rainton on 15 September. He died from multiple injuries, a post-mortem examination found.

Nicholas Rought, 45, and Stuart Smith, 42, denied murder at Newcastle Crown Court.

A third man charged, Paul Tate, was found dead at Holme House prison.

Mr Tate, 49, from Sunderland, died on September 27. An investigation is under way.

Mr Rought, of Shiney Row, and Mr Smith, of no fixed address, will go on trial on 17 March.
