Man run over after 'altercation' in Gateshead

A man who suffered critical injuries when he was hit by a car is believed to have been involved in an argument shortly before he was run over.

The victim, 21, was struck by the car on Sheriff's Highway in Gateshead at about 19:40 GMT on Saturday.

Police believe he was involved in an "altercation" in nearby Hodkin Park shortly before.

He was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, where his condition is described as life-threatening.

Police want to trace two youths who were seen nearby at the time.

They are described as 15 to 16 years old, about 5ft 8ins tall and who were wearing dark hooded tops.
