A man was killed when he was struck by an ambulance in north Northumberland.

The pedestrian, aged in his 50s, died at the scene of the crash on the southbound carriageway of the A1 near Haggerston.

Paramedics were called at about 19:00 GMT. The victim has not yet been identified.

Both lanes of the major route have been closed between the B6353 and B6525, and diversions for drivers have been put in place.
