Newcastle man dies after 'being taken ill at the wheel'

A driver has died after being taken ill at the wheel and crashing into a parked car in Newcastle, Northumbria police have said.

Gary Cann, 43, of Abercrombie Place, Blakelaw, Newcastle was driving his Vauxhall Corsa when he was taken ill.

He ran into an unoccupied Ford Focus that was parked on Woodbrook Avenue in Slatyford at about 00:30 BST on Saturday.

Mr Cann was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

Police closed the road for about two hours and are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101.
