Three people arrested on suspicion of the murder of a Tyneside football badge seller have been released without charge.

John Roberts, 32, was found with head injuries in his home in Park Terrace, Winlaton, Gateshead, in December.

At the time he was facing a charge of abducting a 14-year-old girl.

Northumbria Police said the investigation into the murder remained ongoing and appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.

Officers have spoken to hundreds of people in connection with the case and made eight arrests.

Seven of those were held on suspicion of murder and one on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

All have now been released without charge.

Det Supt Roger Ford said: "This is still an open investigation and inquiries into John Roberts' murder are ongoing

"I would urge anyone with any information to contact police or pass it on to Crimestoppers anonymously."
