West Rainton locator

A murder investigation is under way after a man's body was found in a country lane in County Durham.

A dog walker made the discovery at Mark's Lane, close to a railway bridge in West Rainton, near Durham City.

The dead man has not yet been named and detectives are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine an exact cause of death.

Det Supt Kevin Weir of Durham Police said it was thought the man may have been the victim of a targeted attack.

He said: "The area where the man was found remains cordoned off to allow for a full forensic examination.

"Officers will be carrying out house to house enquiries in the West Rainton area over the next few days.

"At this time I do not believe this to be a random attack and there is no need for the public to be alarmed."
