Woman raped near Newcastle's Gate entertainment complex

A 19-year-old woman has been raped near a popular venue in Newcastle, police said.

The attack happened at 03:00 BST on Friday in Dispensary Lane, behind the Gate entertainment complex.

The offender is said to be about 24 years old and had orange and white face paint under his eyes and on his forehead.

Det Sgt Helen Anderson said: "The description we have of this man is very distinctive due to the face paint."

Northumbria Police said there would be a "visible police presence" in the area to make inquires and offer reassurance.

The force said the victim was being supported by specialist officers.
