A man has been charged with punching a police horse when fans clashed with police following a Tyne-Wear derby.

Barry Rogerson, 45, from Bedlington, is accused of violent disorder after trouble flared in Newcastle city centre when the Magpies lost 0-3 to Sunderland in April.

He is due to appear before Newcastle Magistrates' Court on 9 September.

The horse, Bud, of West Yorkshire's mounted section, was not hurt in the incident.
