Man critical after suspected hit and run in Gateshead

A man is in a critical condition after a suspected hit-and-run on the A1.

A van collided with a lorry on the northbound carriageway at 21:50 BST on Saturday near to Washington Services.

During the incident, a man crossed the central reservation and was hit on the southbound side. The vehicle that struck the man failed to stop.

He was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable. Northumbria Police is appealing for witnesses.

The force said it had referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission as officers were in attendance at the time of the incident.
