An area of Gateshead prone to flooding is to benefit from a £1.4m flood protection scheme.

Northumbrian Water has announced it will improve the sewerage network around the Ravensworth Road area.

The five-month scheme will begin on Monday and will involve installing 850m (2,789ft) of new sewer pipe.

Project manager Danny Coyne said there would be some disruption but "every effort" would be made to complete the job as quickly as possible.

Road closures will be in place during the work on Ravensworth Road, Railway Street, Wellington Road, Renford Street, Seymour Street and Victoria Street.
