Two motorcyclists die in crash on A19

Two motorcyclists have died in a crash on the A19 in County Durham.

A man, 20, and a woman, 21, were on a bike which collided with a lorry on the northbound carriageway near Easington at about 02:45 BST, Durham Police said.

They were both pronounced dead at the scene and the road was closed in both directions for more than 12 hours.

The HGV driver, a 51-year-old from Pontefract in West Yorkshire, was unhurt but arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been bailed pending further inquiries until 25 September.

Sgt Jonathan Morgan said: "While we work to establish what happened in the lead up to the collision, we would ask for anyone who may have seen either of the vehicles in the area at the time mentioned to come forward as soon as possible."
