Paralympian Stephen Miller receives freeman honour

Former World and Paralympic club throw champion Stephen Miller has become an Honorary Freeman of Gateshead.

The former Northumbria University student has trained in Gateshead for more than 15 years and is a lifetime member of Gateshead Harriers.

He was nominated for the honour for his contribution to regional, national and international sport. Gateshead councillors voted unanimously to make him the 21st Freeman of Gateshead.

The 33-year-old athlete from Cramlington in Northumberland, was joined by a handful of other honorary freemen, including veteran broadcaster Mike Neville, former Newcastle United chairman Sir John Hall and mentor Brendan Foster.
