Sunderland homophobic attack: 15-year-old arrested

A teenager has been arrested over what police described as a "frightening" homophobic attack in Sunderland.

A woman in her 20s was kicked, punched and subjected to verbal abuse by a group of about 20 people in a chip shop on Burden Lane on Friday night.

When her partner came to her aid, she suffered the same physical and verbal abuse by the youths. Both were left badly bruised and shaken, police said.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of assault.
