Police investigating the discovery of two bodies in a house in Sunderland are not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

James Stokoe and his wife May, both 79, were found in the bedroom at the house on Hylton Castle Road on Wednesday.

The Northumbria Police officer leading the investigation, Det Ch Insp Christina Barrett, said it appeared no one else was involved.

She said officers were still trying to establish what happened.

Sunderland Area commander Ch Supt Kay Blyth said: "Having an incident like this in a close knit community like Hylton Castle Road can be very traumatic for local people.

"There is no danger to the wider community [but] we are continuing with our increased patrols in the area to offer reassurance and support to local people."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
