Hundreds of Newcastle homes without power after metal thefts

More than 200 properties in Newcastle have been left without electricity after thieves stole cable from a substation.

Northern Powergrid said an electricity substation in Longbenton was targeted overnight and large amounts of cable was stolen, causing significant damage.

About 245 properties are said to be affected.

Engineers are repairing the damage, but it could be "late afternoon" before power is restored, the company said.
