Sunderland mosque protest: Police charge 13 men

Thirteen people have been charged after disorder during a protest at the site of a planned mosque in Sunderland.

Trouble flared in October, when about 200 people attended a pre-planned demonstration at the site in Millfield.

The 13 men, from addresses in North East England and Scotland and aged between 19 and 47, face public order and racial harassment charges.

They are due to appear before magistrates in Sunderland over several days next month.

A planning application for the mosque, by the Pakistan Islamic Centre, has been approved by Sunderland City Council.

The proposals attracted almost 700 letters of objection.
