Paloma Faith and The Vaccines are to headline this year's Evolution Festival in the North East.

Ellie Goulding, Jake Bugg, Rudimental and Sunderland's The Lake Poets will also star at the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside on 26 and 27 May.

Tourism bosses hope the event will boost the area's economy.

Last year about 40,000 festival-goers led to almost 90% occupancy in hotels in Newcastle and Gateshead.

Carol Bell, head of culture and major events at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: "About 39,000 people attended last year's festival on the Newcastle Quayside making it the biggest music event in the North East.

"The large influx of visitors to NewcastleGateshead saw hotel occupancy on Sunday 3 June reach 89%, compared with an average of 51% on the following three Sundays that month.

"The national and international profile of Evolution Festival is on the up, which will in turn encourage more out-of-region visitors to the destination."

Local talent will also be taking to the festival's third stage, which is partnered with Generator, a music development agency based in Newcastle.

The line-up will be announced in March.

Last year's festival saw Dizzee Rascal, Deadmau5 and Maximo Park take to the stage.
