North East schools closed again due to snow

The Met Office said further snow was expected on Tuesday

Some schools in north-east England will be closed again on Tuesday as the Met Office forecasts more icy conditions for the region.

Hundreds of homes were left without power in parts of Northumberland and Tyneside earlier as areas experienced heavy snowfall.

Northern Powergrid said supply was restored in Ponteland and Prudhoe by mid-afternoon.

Police again advised people to only travel if their journey was necessary.

'Climbing the walls'

A combination of snow and heavy winds made travelling conditions difficult throughout Monday, Northumbria Police said.

The force said there were particular problems in Northumberland with access to and from Rothbury proving difficult.

Gritting was continuing overnight.

The Met Office issued a yellow alert for snow for wide parts of the region on Tuesday.

Neil Farrington, who lives in Castleside, County Durham, said weather conditions were as bad as the "horrendous" winter two years ago.

He said: "All the schools round here are closed so I have a house full of kids and dogs.

"Our 12-week-old puppy went out and disappeared in the snow, we had to dig her out.

"The boys have been out sledging over the weekend but it's too deep now. We're all stuck in the house, climbing the walls."
