Detectives investigating the death of a County Durham man have appealed for the public's help to build up a picture of his final hours.

David Scott, 33, was found with stab wounds in a back lane in Rose Avenue, Stanley, early on Sunday.

Police said they were keen to speak to two men seen running in the back lane a short time before Mr Scott was found.

Three men and a woman were arrested on suspicion of murder, and later bailed pending further inquiries.

Det Supt Paul Goundry, of Durham Police, said: "We are following a number of specific lines of inquiry, but we still need to establish a motive for the killing and we have yet to recover a possible murder weapon.

"There may be people who may have seen him and his associates out and about in the South Moor area on the afternoon of Saturday, 22 December, and into the evening.

"We want to establish where he was and who he was with in the last hours of his life."
