A man found murdered in his home had suffered serious head injuries, a post-mortem examination has confirmed.

The body of John Roberts, 32, was discovered at his home in Park Terrace, Winlaton, Gateshead, on Sunday.

Mr Roberts, who police said was facing charges of abducting a 14-year-old girl, was last seen on 13 December.

Northumbria Police said they had had a "very positive response" from the local community and officers were following a number of leads.

Assistant chief constable Steve Ashman said: "Mr Roberts was a well-known man and it's important to remember he was someone's son who was violently attacked and we need people to keep coming forward with any information.

"So far there has been a good response from the public to our appeals - however we need this to continue.

"We know a lot of people have been paying tribute to Mr Roberts following his death - which shows he was a familiar face around Gateshead and Newcastle.

"We'd like to stress there is no suggestion of any risk to the wider public and we have extra local officers in the Winlaton area carrying out inquiries and speaking to residents."
