Murder charge over 1990 death of Simon Martin in Roker

A man has been charged with murdering a teenage boy whose body was found in Sunderland 22 years ago.

Steven John Grieveson, 42, of Roker Avenue, Sunderland, also known as Steven John Field, has been charged with murdering Simon Martin.

The 14-year-old's body was found at Gilside House, Roker, on 26 May 1990, Northumbria Police said.

Mr Grieveson is due to appear via video link at Sunderland Magistrates' Court on 4 December.

Kingsley Hyland, from the Crown Prosecution Service North East, said: "I have today authorised Northumbria Police to charge Steven John Grieveson with one count of murder, after careful consideration of new evidence in this case.

"This decision was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors."
