Polls to decide whether to keep a directly-elected mayor have closed in Hartlepool, with the results expected early on Friday.

Voters have been asked to decide how Hartlepool Borough Council is run in the future.

They had a choice of voting to keep the current system or have it replaced by committees of elected councillors.

There will be either an election for mayor or the appointment of a committee of councillors in May 2013.

Hartlepool Council has been run by an elected mayor with a cabinet since May 2002.

On 2 August, councillors voted unanimously in favour of a referendum.
