A health centre in Northumberland is to undergo a £1.7m upgrade.

Work on Haltwhistle Health Centre in Greencroft Avenue, is expected to begin in September with the newly-modernised centre reopening in spring 2013.

During the refurbishment staff and patients will have to move into temporary accommodation for six months, NHS North of Tyne said.

It is hoped the work will not inconvenience the centre's 5,800 patients, health chiefs added.

Dr Derek Thomson, of the Haltwhistle Medical Group, said: "I hope patients don't mind a little inconvenience when we move to temporary accommodation as it will be worth it in the end for a great, almost new building.

"We would like to reassure patients that their care will not be affected in any way."
