A 35-year-old has been charged with murder after a man suffered fatal stab wounds in Gateshead.

Police officers were called to an address in Rayleigh Grove, in the Bensham area of the town, at about 21:00 BST on Saturday.

The victim, who police believe to be local, died at the scene from multiple stab wounds.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said 35-year-old Karl Bestford, of Rayleigh Grove, was due in court later.

The identity of the victim is not being released until relatives have been informed.
