Tributes paid to South Shields biker killed in crash

The family of a biker who died in South Tyneside have paid tribute to a man who was "well loved and respected".

Peter Leyden, 54, from South Shields, died after a crash on the A194 Newcastle Road on Wednesday.

Mr Leyden, who was riding a Suzuki motorbike, died in hospital after suffering serious injuries in the collision with a Citroen car.

A family statement said: "Peter was well loved and respected by everyone who knew him."

The statement, released by Northumbria Police, added: "Peter was very fit and active and he would have lived a long and happy life, but he has been snatched away from us all far too soon.

"The family are devastated by this tragedy and would like to thank everyone for their kindness and support."

The car driver involved in the crash was not seriously hurt.

An investigation is continuing.
